Neck Pain—Causes, Symptoms, and Prevention

Neck Pain—Causes, Symptoms, and Prevention

Make An Appointment

According to the Toronto Academic Pain Medicine Institute, neck pain is highly prevalent in Canadians between 40 to 69 years. Moreover, it’s most common in people who work on computers and engage in manual labor all day.

The dull ache you feel at the back of your neck all the way to your shoulders is often caused by damage to the soft tissues that make up the muscles and ligaments. Even if your neck is flexible, it doesn’t mean it’s not vulnerable to injuries and other conditions that cause extreme discomfort and pain in patients.

What Are The Causes Of Neck Pain?

Here are some of the most common causes of neck pain.

Worn Joints

The neck joints tend to wear down as you age, which causes a dull ache to develop at the back of your neck. Other conditions that can cause joints and bones to deteriorate with time are osteoporosis and arthritis.

Muscle Strain

If you spend prolonged periods of time hunched over your notebook or laptop, your neck muscles are most likely to become strained and cause extreme discomfort.

Slipped Disc

Also known as a herniated disc, a slipped disc can be caused by an injury or weakness. Patients suffering from this condition have a portion of the disc protruding through the outer ring. This can cause extreme pain, and if the disc happens to be compressing a nerve, it can lead to numbness along the affected area.

What Are The Symptoms Of Neck Pain?

There are a number of ways neck pain can be recognized, but it can vary in different patients. Here are the most common symptoms associated with neck pain.

Soreness is described as a stiffness felt in the muscles. Some patients with neck pain experience soreness in one spot or area on their neck.

Often, neck pain can affect other nerves and muscles around the affected area, which can result in sharp headaches and pain in the scalp.

Patients suffering from neck pain can have a sense of stiffness in the affected part. Moreover, they can also experience restriction in neck movement.

How Can Neck Pain Be Prevented?

Neck pain is easy to prevent if you make some changes to your daily routine, such as:

Use Good Posture

Developing a good posture and maintaining it can take a lot of time and practice, but it’s one of the most effective ways to prevent neck pain. Start by trying to keep your shoulders, ears and hips aligned when you’re standing and even when you’re sitting.

Adjust Your Office Desk and Chair

If you’re someone who has to work on a computer all day, make sure your chair and desk are aligned properly.

I thought I was going to have to deal with plantar fasciitis for the rest of my life. I had done all the recommended steps from orthotics, icing, stretching, massage…nothing worked. I saw Jason. He said 5 treatments with shockwave therapy should significantly improve the problem. I said no way. In a way, I was right-it took 6 treatments but I’m pain free. Amazing. Great service and a product that works.
Thank you to Dr. Nanda and his great team of specialist for taking care me. Very friendly and knowledgable!
Here is what I say about my shock treatments. I have had chronic back pain for over 40 years. Nothing has worked for me and I have tried many, many types of back treatments. Nothing worked. I was going to go for laser spine surgery. Divergent was going to be my last “try” before laser surgery. I went in with absolutely NO expectations. I had one treatment, walked out thinking “okay, my back doesn’t hurt but that won’t last.” Well guess what? It works!!!! I have had 5 treatments since May, 2017 and I have no back pain. None! Without Divergent and Dr. Jason, my life would still be a painful one. Jason, you have saved me. Anyone with any pain needs to go to Divergent. With many thanks to all of you.
I have been suffering with Plantar Fasciitis in both of my feet for over a year now and the pain was just too unbearable to deal with. I did all the recommended stretching, icing and other treatments that just didn’t help. So, I said enough is enough as I deserve to feel better than this and made the appointment at Divergent Health Care.
