At-Home Ways to Get Rid of a Stiff Neck

Neck pain and stiff neck are major health concerns that impact more than 75% of a population in certain countries. According to a Canadian study conducted in 2004, about 35% of people with neck pain complained that their neck pain was consistent.

Here are a few at-home techniques you can try to relieve the tension.

Stretching

It’s recommended that you stretch slowly, avoiding any sudden movements. This will loosen up the tension in your neck, and also help reduce the chances of any stiffness in the future. Just like with any other body part, regular stretching and exercise will make your neck more flexible.

Stiff Neck

A few exercises that may help include slowly tilting your head from side to side. Another could be pressing your shoulder blades together, holding the position for a couple of seconds.

Take Care While Sleeping

Many people complain of waking up with neck pain after a night’s rest. This is possibly due to awkward sleeping positions or the wrong kind of pillow. Using a higher pillow may cause your neck muscles to remain flexed throughout the night.

If you suspect that your problem is caused by sleeping incorrectly, you can try the following to better your sleeping environment:

  • Investing in a firmer mattress
  • Relaxing before sleeping
  • Using a neck pillow to keep your neck and head in a suitable position
  • If you sleep on your back, invest in a flatter pillow,keeping your head and neck aligned with your spine.

Visiting a Chiropractor

If none of these at-home remedies work, you may want to seek professional help. Consider visiting a licensed chiropractor who can manipulate the neck muscles to get rid of some of the stiffness. If you feel sharp discomfort during therapy, convey this to your practitioner.
